Upendra Tripathi was born in 1903 at Muraripur in Cuttack district. He is an eminent writer of
children’s literature in odia, and had studied at Training School, Cuttack. In 1924 appeared his first poem in the monthly Sahakara, and subsequently more poems were published in the famous odia journals such as Mukura, Sahakara, Naba Bharata, Panchamrita, Jahnamamu, Chaturanga, Dagara, Mo Desha, Sisu sampada and Minabazara. In 1954-55 his Ghanti ghagudi (Jingling anklets) received an award from the Government of India.
His other collections of short stories are Shishu sankhali (Children’s treasury), Bhagini go (O my sister),Dindima (Drum), Bhisana sadajantra (Awful intrigue), Hasachangudi (The basket of laughter) and Kashi kakudi (Green cucumber). Gandhi koili is a biography of Gandhiji in the form of an address to the bird cuckoo, following the tradition of the Koili songs of odisha. He has also written a large number of works which await publication. A pre-eminent juvenile litterateur and a successful teacher, he now leads a quiet, retired life.
