Santanu Kumar Acharya was born in 1933,He is one of the modern fiction writers, was born in Calcutta and took bis M.Sc. degree in Chemistry from Utkal University in 1956. He taught in several government colleges and held other prestigious posts as well.
His first book Mana marmara (1959), a short story collection, was received with enthusiasm. But the
work that took the odia literary scene by storm was his novel Nara kinnara (1962). Some critics hold that he was the first wtiter who introduced ‘stream of consciousness’ to odia fiction with this novel, which also got him the state Sahitya Akademi Award.
Acharya’s next novel, Satabdira Nachiketa (1965) depicts the story of a young research scholar
struggling through poverty and various obstacles posed by society. This novel again embodies several
literary trends like impressionism, etc. His other novels are Tinoti ratrira sakala (The morning of three nights, 1969), Dakshinabartta (1972), Yatrara prathama pada (1976) and Shakuntala (1980).
He is also known for his short stories. Other than the Mana marmara, he has to his credit Durbar (1965), Sheshpada (1969), Ei shesha padati (1972), Aranyara chula (1975) and Adina Baula (1978).His contribution to children’s literature is also substantial, including the awardcwinning books like Akashaku satati pahacha.
