Ram Chandra Mishra was born in 1920,He is a dramatist, was born at Daspalla in Puri district of odisha. He did his B.A. from Patna University and B.L. from Utkal University. He joined odisha Administrative Service for sometime and then changed over to legal practice. He started writing during the forties when the Indian national movement was at its peak.
Inspired by Gandhian idealism he sought to establish an ideal society free from economic stringency and moral corruption. Seriously concerning himself with the major issues of his time in his works, he tries to strike deep at the roots of evil that endanger contemporary society. In his plays, he critically presents the conflict between idealism and so-called modernism. His major plays are naturally problem-plays that deal with social problematics.
Influenced by Kavichandra Kalicharan Pattanayak, who pioneered the modern theatre movement in odisha, Mishra started writing social plays about the problems of common people in a society with changing values. His Gandhian leanings made him treat his characters with a great deal of sympathy. Most of his plays vouch for the criticism and vision of an artist, with a burning zeal to reform.
The plays like Mulia (1946), Ghara sansara (1950), Bhai bhauja (1954) and Narottam Das kahe (1962) are a few examples. In these plays there are ideal characters who project the dramatist’s vision. He has written 18 plays so far and his first play was Abhimana (1942).
His other significant plays are Managera (1945), Kavisurya (1946), Sai Padisa (1953), Nataka Ritimata (1953), Sevika (1955), Mamata (1956), Chabuk (1958), Puanighara (1962), Godhuli lagna (1968), Kisa puni dekha na jae (1969), and Maura mani. A master creator of situations, in the plays he weaves complex plots. His characterization is realistic and at times becomes idealistic. His dialogues are a mixture of the colloquial and the sophisticated and combine the humorous and the serious which brings out a remarkable dramatic effect. His plays are commercially successful and he is regarded as a popular playwright.
