Many years ago, when I read Mrs. Ashapurna Devi’s ‘First Promise’, I had a strong desire to translate it. But when I got to know the author directly, I heard that someone else had taken permission for her translation. The bar of compassion fell from the sympathetic heart of the author. She said to me, “You translate ‘Subarnalata’.” With her holy blessings I have tried to translate ‘Subarnalata’ into Oriya today.
Why do you want to translate? It seems like everyone is enjoying the taste of such a great book. In the language of the author, there is still violence against women here and there in society.‘Subarnalata’ is a symbol of the agonizing pain of the liberating soul of that bond-tormented age. But translating it seemed like the ‘Subarnalata’ was not dead.‘Subarnalata’ is wandering here..in this bed she is lying face down on the wall … Subarnalata is making a home-world … Inside myself I see that Subarnalata.
Despite the progress of the country, how many women have got their due? Who has heard the cries of his soul? While this translation may have been expected that more women would have been aware of the problem, and perhaps hoped that some of their problems might have been solved, in reality it could be found easily in the villages, —this hope is in vain.Because not everyone has the resources to buy and read what the book cost will. Still hopeful, some will buy and read, some will beg.You can also read from some libraries. If so many benefits of the female race are made possible by this small effort of mine, I will consider my labor worthwhile.
