Debi Choudhurani is a classic Bengali novel written by Bankimchandra Chottopadhyaya. Set in the late 18th century, the novel tells the story of a young girl, Debi, who is forced into marriage with an old man. However, Debi is a strong-willed woman who rebels against the patriarchal society and becomes a legendary figure for the oppressed people. She forms a gang of bandits who rob the rich and help the poor. Debi is romanticised as a goddess-like figure who fights for justice and embodies the moral code of her time. The novel deals with themes of rebellion, gender roles, class struggle and colonialism. It has been adapted into multiple films and plays.
