Mrutyunjay Rath was born in 1882 at the village of Dakshina Rajasa in the district of Puri. He was a brilliant student and stood first in the degree examination, and received the title ‘Vanibhushan’. He became a Sanskrit teacher at the Cuttack Collegiate School.Mrutyunjay was a devoted writer who enriched Oriya prose with his essays, biographies, criticism archaeological studies, and translations. He knew Oriya, Sanskrit, Bengali and English.
In the first phase of his literary career he wrote a number of educational books, such as Odia rachana o anuvada, Engraji-Sanskruta anuvada and Odia mulasabdabodhika. He also wrote a descriptive poem called Naraja (1922), a novel called Adbhuta parinam (1915), and two collections of essays called Naridarpan and Prabandha path (1927). His other works are Sarala charita (1911), Karmayogi Gourishankar (1925), Brahmajna Madhusudan, which were serialized in periodicals like Utkal sahitya, Mukura and Prajabandhu. He wrote some bibliography like Gopalchandra Mishra (ed.), Mrutyunjay granthavali (Cuttack, 1971); N.B. Samantaray,Odia sahityara itihasa (1964); Srinivas Mishra, Adhunika Odia gadya sahitya (Cuttack, 1978).
