Nilamani Mohapatra Sahoo was born in 1926,He is an an outstanding figure in modern Oriya fiction, was born at Niali in district Cuttack and did his M.A. in Oriya from Utkal University. He has taught Oriya literature in various government colleges in Odisha.A prolific writer, he has to his credit 19 short-story collections, 2 novels, and 10 collections of essays. All his writings are marked by a rare blend of wit and pathos. His short stories are unique, both for their emotional appeal and for their distinct vision of life. He has experimented with a wide range of styles and techniques, and has also contributedd to literary criticism and journalism.
His short-story collection, Abhisapta Gandharba (1981), won him the prestigious Sarala. Award as well as the Sahitya Akademi Award (1984). The stories in this collection are thinly veiled autobiographical pieces evoking, with a sense of nostalgia and his characteristic humour, the intense world of his childhood.He has also received other literary awards including the state Sahitya Academy award and the B.C. Nayak literary award.
He has edited a number of literary journals, including Jhankara, Utkal prasang, Odisha review and
Vivekanandanka vani o rachana. He has also been closely associated with a number of literary, cultural and spiritual organisations and is the Vice-President of the New Life Education Trust, Odisha. Some of his other significant short story collections are Ranu apa tharu Pussy paryanta (1966), Anya rupa rupantara (1977), Pingala se anyajane (1977) and Sekala pakhala (1978). Dhara and dhara (1961) and Tamasi Radha (1964) are his two novels, and Kichhi sutra kinchit byakhya (1976), Dhwani dhwani pratidhwani (1977) and Devadasara dristipata are his collections of essays.
