Krishnacharan Pattanayak was born in.19th century in a Karan family in the state of Dharkot in the Ganjam district. He served as an officer under Krishna Singh, the king of Dharkot, and received patronage from him for his literary pursuits. He translated the Sanskrit Ramayana into odia in 1815 after retirement. He also rendered some of the puranas, namely the Vamana purana and the Kalki purana into odia, besides the Bhagavata. His translations were not literal, his main purpose was to communicate the ideas. His language, on the whole, is simple, lucid and musical.
