Krishnachandra Panigrahi was born in 1909. He is an eminent historian and essayist, took an M.A. in history and subsequently a Ph.D. from the University of Calcutta, and served as college teacher, Curator, Deputy Superintendent of the Archaelogical Survey of India and Professor of History at Gangadhar Meher College and at Berhampur University. He struggled his way up in life since childhood. His father, who was a priest with a progressive outlook, used to perform rituals for the downtrodden. As a result the family was made outcast but refused to bow down before orthodoxy. Panigrahi started his education late, but being a brilliant student, got the royal patronage of Mayurbhanja. He received archaelogical training and specialised in the study of pottery. He was a historian of high calibre. His Archaelogical Remains of Bhubaneswar(1961) is an outstanding contribution. He contributed seventy research papers and three books on history,namely, Chronology of Bhauma Karas and Somabanshi of odisha, History of odisha (1981) and History of odisha Architecture. His historical studies and findings were scientific and based on documentary evidence.is contribution to odia literature is worthy of mention. His book Itihas o kimbadanti (History and Legend,1964) is a masterly combination of historical research and literary art. Sarala sahityare aitihasika chitra (Historical element in Sarala literature, 1976) ushered in a new dimension in the critical assessment of Sarala literature. He also wrote a monograph on Sarala Das for the ‘Makers of India Series’ of the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. odishara sanskriti o itihasare Biraja kshetra (Place of Biraja kshetra in the history and culture of odisha, 1973) is an account of Jajapur (Biraja kshetra) which is the Holy seat of goddess Biraja.Prabandha manas (The mind of the essayist, 1972) deals with different thoughts and feelings of the author.These essays are invariably charged with poetic flavour. Panigrahi has also written a book called Mo samayar odisha (odisha of my time), an autobiography which gives an account of contemporary odisha, and is one of the best written works in odia in this genre. He is, indeed, a master of prose style, and has received a number of awards like odisha Sahitya Akademi Award, Vishub Award and Sarala Upanayan Award.He wrote 2 popular bibliography Kunjabihari Dash, Kavi kahani (Cuttack, 1984).
