Dharanidhara Mishra was the author of one of the earliest odia translations of the celebrated Gitagovinda of Jayadeva. In this work Dharanidhara recast the subject-matter of the twelve Sargas of the original Sanskrit work in sixteen Chhandas composed in different odia metres. The rendering is almost literal and most of the words employed in the original text have been retained. The translation has the same lucidity of diction as the original and with its pleasant music produces the same sentimental effect. Of about half-a-dozen translations of the time, now available, Dharanidhara’s translation is the most popular and is, for its antiquity, an evidence in support of the contention that Odisha was the homeland of Jayadeva.
