Chandrasekhar Rath was born in 1929.He is an famous essayist, novelist and short-story writer, was born in the town of Balangir. He took his M.A. degree in 1952 from Lucknow University and joined the educational service of the Orissa government. A widely read man, he knows equally well Oriya, English, Hindi and Bengali languages.
His first articles were in English, but in about 1961 he turned to writing in Oriya. He is a writer of excellent essays, which embody fervid intellectualism. Drusti o darshana, Asruta swara, Mu satyadharma kahuchi, Uttara aranya, Madhu sandhana and Kritadasara swapna are collections of his essays.
His short stories reveal him as a humanitarian and a realist, and have brought him wide recognition. Aneka banya pare, Ashwarohira galpa, Samrata o anyamane and Anya eka sakala are collections of his short stories. His novels, which equally bear the stamp of his humanitarianism, include Jantrarudha, Asurya upanibesha and Nabajataka. He received the Orissa Sahitya Academy Award for his novels in 1980 and for his essays in 1981. In 1982 he received the Sarala Award for his short stories.
Eminent litterateur Prof Chandrasekhar Rath passed away at a private hospital here on Friday. He was 89. Last month, Prof Rath was nominated for Padma Shree. Born in 1929 at Malpada village in Balangir district, he was a trendsetter in Odia prose and received many accolades. A Post Graduate from Canning College, University of Lucknow, Prof Rath had joined Odisha Education Service in 1952 as lecturer in English and served as Secretary of Test Book Bureau before retiring as Deputy Director Public Instruction (DPI) in 1987.
