Binodchandra Nayak was born in 1919.He is one of the eminent and popular Odia poet and also an educationist. He did his M.A.in English language and literature from Patna University and also in Odia
language and literature from Utkal University. He taught Odia in different colleges and worked for many
years as Secretary of the Odisha Sahitya Academy, the Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy and the Odisha ‘Lalit Kala Academy’. He is now Principal of Brajraj nagar N.A.C. College in the district of Sambalpur in Odisha. He is predominantly a romantic poet. He is an erudite scholar and has a broad outlook. He uses images of distant lands and people, which are unique in modern Odia poetry. His style, though ornate, is lucid and spontaneous.
He writes mainly free verse.His prose-poems are rich in their suggestiveness. He received the ‘Sahitya
Akademi Award’ in 1970 for his collection of poems,’Sarisrupa'(The reptiles).Among his other collections
are ‘Haimanti’ (Early winter, 1933),’Nilachandrara upatyaka'(The valley of the blue moon,1951),’Nandadevi’
(1960),’Sata Tarara Dipa'(The lamp of seven stars, 1961),’Ilabritta (1970)’, Pohala Dwipara Upakatha (The
episode of the coral island, 1973) and Anya eka asarpi (Another gold coin, 1977). Some of his selected
poems have been published in Hindi, Bengali, Assamese and English translations. His only verse-drama Chandra O Tara (The moon and the stars, 1950) is a fine piece of work. He has also tried his hand at writing some literary essays and criticism. And he write some bibliography like “Nityananda Satapathy”, “Sabujaru sampratika(Cuttack,1979)”.
