Rama Das was born in 1736 a Brahmin family in the village of Dura in Mahuri state of Ganjam district. His father was Lachmana Das. Rama Das is known as the author of Dardhyata Bhakti Rasamrita (Aesthetic bliss of firm faith in God). The life and devotional career of more than fifty devotees and saints of Odisha and other parts of India, have been depicted in the work. They are mostly historical and puranic personalities such as Bali, Harishchandra, Balaram Dasa, Jagannath Dasa, Kabir, Krishna Dasa, Raghunath Dasa and many others. The work is so populat in Odisha that every Odia villager keeps a copy of it and reads it along with the Bhagavata of Jagannath Dasa.
The stories also supply many reliable and useful historical data about the reign of kings Kapilendradeva,Purusottamdeva and Prataparudtadeva of Odisha. Again, these stories have been narrated in a very simple, but thrilling language and the style of description is appealing. The other kavya of Rama Das is Rama Rasamrita which deals with the life and glory of Ramachandra,
the divine incarnation of Vishnu in human form.
