Brajanath Rath was born in 1936. He started his literary career as a poet in the early fifties. He is a poet with leftist leanings. His works exhibit considerable artistic excellence. Rath has not sacrificed the lyrical grace of his poetry for the sake of experiment. He has the following collections of poems to his credit: Maru golap (1960), Tinoti niswasar akash (1962), Nijaswa samlap (1969), Maru golap o anyanya kabita (1972) and Nisabda pratibad (1977).
Brajanath Rath was the editor of a periodical called Kavya and has co-edited two anthologies of modern verse, viz., Dharitri (1957) and Samasamayika Odia prema kabita (Contemporary Odia love poems, 1962). Several of his poems have been translated into Hindi and published under the title Kanch ka ghar. He has been associated with a number of literary organisations. He has received many awards for his literary contribution. The earlier poems of Rath were essentially romantic, but later he eschewed romanticism and propagated a revolutionary Ideology. His style is simple and graceful.
Ratha was awarded with Tagore Literature Awards in 2010 for Samanya Asamanya,a poetry collection containing three types of poems: progressive, satirical and philosophical. This unique collection carries the message of hope to mankind. His first poem was written to welcome India’s independence in 1947. He has been conferred with the highest honours from the Odisha Sahitya Academy Award for Manara Manachitra (Map of the Mind) to the Silver Jubilee Award for poetry by Prajatantra Prachar Samiti, Cuttack.
