Dr. Barish Panigrahi, a well-known engineer from Odisha, was able to read a lot of books on Buddhism in the United States and understand the contribution of Odisha to Buddhism. Returning to Odisha after many years in the United States, Dr. Panigrahi realized that Buddhism was not discussed in Odisha at all.
This must have bothered him.D.T.Suzuki one of the most prominent figures who popularized the philosophy of Buddhism in the West. His book ‘Outlines of Mahayana Buddhism’ is one of the most talked about books in the world. Although Mahayana Buddhism was born in Odisha, no books have been written in Oriya in this regard.
Therefore,he decided to translate Suzuki’s book into her mother tongue and completed the task very well.In 13 chapters, in very simple, intelligible language, he has written in Oriya with confidence from the original composition of Suzuki about the peculiarities of Buddhism and the special ideology of the great sages. This translated book has become very instructive. It will no doubt be admired by people from all walks of life.
This translation book by Dr. Panigrahi is a commendable effort to give Oriya readers a direct idea of Buddhism, especially the great way. To this day, the writers of our state have not paid much attention to translation literature. All authors value poetry, novels and storytelling.Almost no one has concentrated on translating high-quality books written in other languages. His contribution to Oriya translation literature is commendable for Dr. Panigrahi’s hard work in translating the Oriya book ‘Outlines of Mahayana Buddhism’ into Oriya.
After Buddhism was born in India two and a half thousand years ago, Odisha became one of the main centers of Buddhism. Emperor Ashoka defeated Kalinga in the third century BC and was shocked by the horrors of war and converted to Buddhism. At that time, the importance of Kalinga for Buddhism increased Ruling from Toshali, the capital of Kalinga, Ashoka preached Buddhism all over the world. His son Mahendra and daughter Sanghamitra took Buddhist sayings from the port of Kalinga to the Sinhalese island.
The birth and rearing of the Mahayana group took place only in this Kalinga-Utkal-Kosala country and from the first century AD to the ninth century AD, Odisha was known all over the world as the main area of Mahayana religion. The great philosophers of Mahayana, Ashwaghosa, Nagarjuna, Aryabeda, Asang, Basubandhu, etc., developed their philosophy only on the Odisha Peetha.
Buddhism is now almost extinct from Odisha. The dominance of Jagannath religion has been going on since the eleventh century. Many scholars and historians have agreed that the Jagannath Temple in Puri was originally a Buddhist Chaitya, and that the first installation of the Jagannath-Subhadra-Balabhadra was in accordance with the Buddhist-Dharma-Sangha of Buddhism.Sadly, people in Odisha today do not know anything about Buddhism and there is not enough literature on Buddhism in Oriya. It is even rarer to find an Oriya book on Mahayana Buddhism. The main purpose of this translation is to fill that gap.
