I read about A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s autobiography “Wings of Fire” from a newspaper. My young friend and colleague Mr. Malay Ranjan Kar bought the book from Calcutta and gifted it to me on April 25 last year. I was overjoyed to find the book and finished reading the book twice in five days. I was so impressed by the book that I started the Oriya translation of the book on May 1 and finished translating it on July 23. On July 25, I wrote a letter from Dr. Kalam seeking permission, and I danced happily after receiving a letter from him. At his suggestion, I contacted the University Press (India) Ltd., the publisher of the book, in Hyderabad. And at the end of a lot of correspondence, I got permission to publish a book from him in November.Mr. Ajay Kumar of New Age Publications expressed interest in publishing the book. After talking to Ajaybabu in person, I learned that he had read the book. His enthusiastic conversations inspired me a lot.
Dr. Kalam came to Bhubaneswar as the chief guest on the founding day of Nalco on January 4 this year. I met him at ten o’clock in the morning at the Nalco Guest House on January 9, and our conversation lasted about 15 minutes. His simple, childish, sincere, amiable demeanor amazed me.I saw in him a reflection of everything.I knew about him from his autobiography. He advised me to convey his autobiography translated into Oriya to high school students deprived of English medium education, especially those studying in rural areas. He thanked me for my enthusiasm and interest in reading the three-page letter I wrote to him. Students have the future of the country and the talent within them. By guiding the students in the right direction and persuading them to follow the path of truth, their insights will develop, so that they can bring the glory of the nation, he told me in an emotional language. In the book ‘Wings of Fire’ I have tried my best to translate literal Oriya and have written the scientific words in the original English words which have not been possible for me to translate into Oriya. In this book I have included all the English poems and their Oriya translations, both in this book. I hope readers can enjoy Dr. Kalam’s companionship and get inspiration and encouragement from him through this book.
