One of the main features of ancient Oriya lyric literature is Chautisha. Its basic meaning is- “Fourteen verses or verses whose first letters of the verses are all arranged in order from ‘a’ to ‘kshy’.Among the original formats and forms of lyric poetry in Oriya language are fourteen-letter verses and dandi, koili and chautisha. The poet Sarala Das was the first to apply the ‘fourteen letters’ verse tradition in the Mahabharata. Although the first foot in the poet’s composition is fourteen letters, the number of letters of the other foot is twenty to thirty, thirtyfour. This trend is known as the Dandi circle. Balaram Das later continued this trend. Used in the two epics of Sarla and Balarama, this favorite poem is known mainly in Odisha as the ‘Dandi circle’.The ‘Jagmohan Ramayana’ by Balaram Das has gained popularity in Odisha as a ‘Dandi Ramayana’.Chautisha has created a unique place in the world of Oriya literature like Chhanda, Chupadi, Fourteenth Poetry. Its narrative sequence fills the soul of the enlightened listener, the reader with endless enthusiasm and excitement.
